Building a Sustainable Future: Insights from the Feeding the Future 2024 Report

Cold Summit Development is proud to contribute to the ongoing global discussion about the essential role infrastructure plays in building sustainable and resilient food systems. The recently released Feeding the Future 2024 Report, supported by Economist Impact and Lineage, highlights how investments in food system infrastructure—particularly cold storage, processing, and transport—can significantly reduce food waste, improve agricultural productivity, and empower communities worldwide.

The report underscores a pressing challenge: despite producing enough food to nourish the global population, systemic inefficiencies and lack of infrastructure leave over 700 million people facing hunger and malnutrition. Alarmingly, nearly one-third of all food is lost or wasted annually, contributing to significant environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions and resource depletion.

A key focus of the report is the importance of reliable infrastructure across the entire food value chain. From irrigation and storage facilities to transportation networks and retail markets, well-planned infrastructure ensures that food reaches consumers safely, efficiently, and affordably. Cold storage solutions, in particular, play a critical role in preserving perishable goods, preventing spoilage, and supporting the global movement of fresh produce, proteins, and pharmaceuticals.

At Cold Summit, our mission aligns closely with these insights. We are dedicated to developing state-of-the-art cold storage campuses—like our project at the Port of Wilmington—that drive economic growth, minimize waste, and deliver flexible temperature-controlled solutions. Our facilities are designed not only to meet immediate supply chain demands but also to support long-term sustainability and community development.

The report also emphasizes the need for inclusive food value chains that provide opportunities for smallholder farmers, women, and underserved populations. At Cold Summit, we are deeply committed to supporting the communities we operate in through educational programs, local employment initiatives, and partnerships that enhance food security.

Furthermore, the Feeding the Future 2024 report highlights the urgency of building climate-resilient infrastructure. Cold Summit integrates sustainable design principles and advanced technologies to ensure our developments reduce environmental impacts while providing reliable, efficient services.

We believe that collaborative efforts between governments, NGOs, and private sector partners, as outlined in the report, are crucial to creating a future where no one goes hungry and food systems are equitable and sustainable.
